Tom Odell - Wonderful Life

I loved this song as soon as I heard it - something about the bass and laid back drums felt enveloping - a warm embrace. I remember playing it to my Dad in a coffee shop and he was in tears by the end - something about the lines ‘St Peter’s calling’ and ‘I don’t wanna die’ moved us in an indescribable way. To me, the song sounded like someone on their deathbed, recalling vignettes that had lodged themselves in their brain. It felt like a reminder to pay attention to things that could go unnoticed - the beauty of a small plastic window filling with iridescent light, or a solitary spider just trying to stay out of the cold. Visually, I imagined seeing your life flash before your eyes - a complex, often bewildering medley of images - intimate moments with loved ones interspersed with the bleakness of modern life. I worked closely with heartsh6kr to create this visual world, embracing the flaws and imperfections of mixed media animation. We edited a bunch of stock footage alongside the footage that we had shot for the campaign so far, and then printed each frame onto paper and scanned it. I love how the process replicates the imperfections of early film scanning, where a succession of still images seem to almost come alive and dance on the screen.
