Tom Odell - Ugly

One of many videos that we shot at 80six studios, incorporating a large LED screen which became an inverted image of the box void we created for Don’t Let Me Go. The lyrics for Ugly are raw and brutally honest, so I wanted to create a video with a similarly bold yet simple approach. I dug through a load of old comments on Tom’s social media accounts (a mixture of positive and negative), which were then beautifully animated by Fraser Muggeridge studio. “Not just a reflection of people’s opinions”… I liked the idea that the comments could accumulate into a wall of text (not unlike a concrete poem) - the words, in their sheer number, become essentially meaningless - broken down and destroyed as they form the backdrop to the song’s cathartic climax.
